Oasis to blow Independence record out of the water
The title “Largest Cruise Ship in the World” will pass from Independence of the Seas to Oasis of the Seas in December 2009. This Royal Caribbean ship is currently under construction in Finland and will be followed by a sister ship Allure of the Seas within a few years.
The ship will be delivered earlier than anticipated and its inaugural cruise will be a special four-night voyage – departing December 1, 2009 – to celebrate the launch of an all-new Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private beach paradise resort in Haiti. Oasis of the Seas is 16 decks high, 1,181 ft (360 m) long and weighs 220,000 tonnes. It will be able to carry 5400 passengers on a double occupancy basis. It is costing €755 to construct.
Every new Cruise Liner claims to have new innovations and “firsts” and Oasis of the Seas is no exception. The ship will have seven “neighbourhoods” of which three have been unveiled so far – Central Park, Boardwalk and Royal Promenade.
Central Park opens to the sky and features lush tropical grounds spanning more than the length of a football field. Its piazza is the ship’s town square, which evolves from a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere during the day to a gathering space for dining, entertainment and street performances at night. There are 254 Central Park View balcony staterooms and 70 Central Park View staterooms planned.
The Boardwalk was inspired by different piers from around the world. Passengers will be able to watch water shows at the AquaTheater, take a ride on the first ever full size handcrafted carousel at sea, ride a zip wire nine decks above the boardwalk, shop at five different stores, and enjoy five restaurants/bars. Passengers have also the option of staying in 28 two-level, loft suites with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The Royal Promenade is a common feature of many Royal Caribbean ships. Packed with bars, restaurants and shops the newest attraction of this ship’s Royal Promenade is “The Rising Tide Bar”. The bar will asend and desend three decks above the Promenade on a continuous basis so hardened drinkers will have every reason to feel elated and later deflated as the night progresses! When completed the ship will operate Caribbean cruises out of Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Independence of the Seas will continue to be the largest passenger ship operating in Europe for many years to come as the sheer size of the “newest largest liner in the World” means that it cannot access many European ports.
